What is the axis of symmetry called? - ANSWERThe principle axis.
What is the principle focus? - ANSWER-A point on
the axis which is the same distance from the optical
centre as the focal length. This is where light rays
travelling parallel to the principle axis prior to
refraction converge.
Define focal length. - ANSWER-The distance
between the centre of the lens and the principle
focus.
Describe the links between galaxies, black holes
and quasars. - ANSWER-Quasars are produced by
(supermassive) black holes. ✓
These black holes are at the centre of (active)
galaxies (active galactic nuclei.) ✓
Explain what is meant by the Rayleigh criterion. -
ANSWER-Two objects will just be resolved when the
first minimum/edge of the airy disc in the diffraction
pattern of one image ✓ Coincides with central
maximum/centre of the airy disc of the other. ✓
How does an astronomical refracting telescope
work? - ANSWER-There are two converging lens,
the objective lens and the eyepiece lens. The role of
the objective lens is to collect light and create a real
imagine of a distant object. This image is then
magnified by the eyepiece lens, which produces a
virtual image (formed at infinity so as to reduce eye
strain when looking between the object and the
telescope image).
State the property of the quasar that led to its
discovery. - ANSWER-High power/powerful radio
emitter. ✓
Describe the main features of the radial velocity
method in the detection of planets. - ANSWERPeriodic Doppler shift in light received (from star) ✓
Due to star and planet orbiting common centre of
mass ✓
Discuss one problem associated with the
determination of the distance from the Earth to a
quasar. - ANSWER-Distant quasars are very faint;
or Type 1a supernova (or standard candle) in
associated galaxy would be very faint ✓
Reference to inverse square law ✓
or
Due to dark energy/accelerating universe, ✓
use of Hubble's Law/inverse square law not reliable
over large distances. ✓
